The Foundations of Kihon: Precision, Balance, and Kime
An exploration of basic karate techniques (Kihon) as the essential foundation for both expressive Kata and effective Kumite.
In traditional Shotokan Karate, Kihon (basics) is not merely the starting point for beginners, but the lifelong core of martial mastery. Every punch (Tsuki), block (Uke), and kick (Geri) relies on fundamental principles of posture, hip rotation (Koshi), and breath coordination.
The Role of Kime
Kime represents the sudden focal concentration of muscular tension and mental focus at the exact millisecond of impact, immediately followed by total relaxation. Without proper Kihon calibration, speed becomes erratic and technique lacks penetrating power.
